Nicholas Nickleby was published between 1839 and 1839 and is Charles Dickens' third novel. The book is best remembered for its statement on boarding schools in the depiction of Dotheboys Hall and for the comic episode describing Vincent Crummles travelling theatrical company.
In the story, Nicolas' sister, Kate, works for a dressmaker called Mrs Mantalini. Her lazy husband, relied on his wife to finance his extravagant tastes.
