Title
Sanger's Circus parading on Leith Walk at Croall Place
Description
Circus performers and animals parade past Croall Place at Shrubhill on Leith Walk. They are headed by a man on a piebald horse wearing a tricorn hat. Behind him a man on an elephant rides side-by-side with another horse rider. Many children (boys) are following the circus members down the road. Tramlines can be seen set in to the cobbled road.

In the 19th century there were hundreds of circuses operating in Britain and Sanger's was one of those that travelled from town to town. "Lord" George Sanger was the most successful circus owner of Victorian times. He was known for being a smart dresser, instantly recognisable by his top hat and diamond tie pin.
Circuses would announce their arrival in town with a parade, a great way to advertise their show. Sanger's parades were lavish events. His wife, Mlle Pauline de Vere, would travel in a carriage dressed as Britannia with a lion and a lamb at her feet. It was covered in gold gilt and drawn by four cream horses. After the coach came the animals; camels, elephants; exotic animals in cages, or led by trainers.
Sanger's even presented Royal Command Performances for Queen Victoria at Sandringham and Balmoral Castle as the Queen was a great circus fan.
