The new Heriot-Watt College building was opened in Chamber Street in 1887. It began however in 1821 with the establishment of the School of Arts of Edinburgh, with the aim to teach science and technology to working class students. It became the Watt Institution and School of Arts, which in 1885 merged with the George Heriot Trust becoming known as Heriot-Watt College. The initial priorities for the college were to remodel its buildings at Chambers Street, which were completed in 1887. The college was granted university status in 1966 and subsequently vacated this building for a new campus at Riccarton. The building is now inhabited by the Crown Office.
