Sophia Jex-Blake matriculated at Edinburgh University in 1869, when English universities didnt let women study medicine. Edinburgh reneged the places they had offered female students in 1873, so she completed her studies in Berne. Sophia believed that poorer women and children needed access to medical services delivered by women and so opened a dispensary in Grove Street. She also established the Edinburgh School of Medicine for Women in 1886.
