Louisa Stevenson was involved in campaigns to open medical and university education to women. She was a poor-law guardian, active in ensuring the quality of care in the citys poorhouses. She was a lifelong supporter of the suffrage movement, and represented Edinburghs suffragists at a meeting with Campbell-Bannerman, the prime minister in 1906. For most of her adult life, she lived with her unmarried sisters at 13 Randolph Crescent.
