The rectangular shaped tower house, Abergeldie Castle, can be seen in the centre of the picture. Wooden steps in the foreground, sit on the bank of the River Dee which flows past the castle. Trees and a large wall separate the castle from the river.

Abergeldie Castle sits on the River Dee near Crathie, in Aberdeenshire. The castle is a four storey tower house built in 1550 by the Early of Huntly, Sir Alexander Gordon of Midmar. The castle remained in the ownership of the Gordon family until 1848 when Prince Albert purchased a lease for its use by the Royal family as a summer house.

The castle sits in an estate which spreads over 10 miles of Deeside. The grounds contain many different species of trees. There is a legend that the castle is haunted by a French maid who used to work within the castle. French Kate or Kitty Rankie, as she was known, was accused of being a witch and jailed within the castle. Once her guilt was proven she was burned at the stake on a nearby hill.
