Fort Augustus itself was built by General Wade, during the Jacobean uprising and in the 17th century the village it stood near became known by the same name. The fort is named after a son of King George, Prince William Augustus, The Duke of Cumberland who was otherwise known as 'Butcher Cumberland' after his role in defeating the Jacobites at the Battle of Culloden in 1746.
Fort Augustus sits on Loch Ness, half way between Fort William and Inverness, on the Caledonian Canal which was built by Thomas Telford in the 1800s. The canal runs from Corpach on the west coast of Scotland and joins it through a series of lochs and canals to Inverness.
