The Weigh House or Butter Tron was situated at the head of the West Bow. It was used to weigh butter and cheese intended for sale in the Lawnmarket area. It was built around 1352, and demolished in 1822 when the Lawnmarket was widened in preparation for George IV's visit to Edinburgh.
Lawnmarket is the section of Edinburgh's Royal Mile running from its junction with Johnston Terrace to where it meets George IV Bridge. Regular markets were held in this area until the late 18th century.
