A busy street scene in the Lawnmarket. On the road are men talking and sitting on a horse-drawn cart, children play. A man pushes a handcart whilst a dog runs nearby. People walk along the pavement which has lamp posts on one side and shops on the other.

Lawnmarket is the section of Edinburgh's Royal Mile running from its junction with Johnston Terrace to where it meets George IV Bridge. Regular markets were held in this area until the late 18th century.
