1790

Silver

HH4163/80
The pattern on this cup had been engraved. The engraver cuts the silver away from the surface with a tool called 'graver'. Because this technique cuts the silver away from the surface rather than pushing it, no impression is made on the inside of the object. To avoid wasting expensive precious metal any small pieces of silver which are cut out during the engraving process are collected by the silversmith and melted down and cast into other objects.
Purchase aided by government grant.
