Le triomphe de la Mort
Description
Frontispiece to the volume of the Dances of Death, engraved by David Deuchar after original designs by John Holbein, first produced in 1786.
The artist Holbein appears behind a curtain, at the side of a stone table. The figure of Death is opening to him the scenes he is about to sketch. The medallion at the top is a portrait of Holbein and his palette is on the ground, with the inscription 'D Deuchar fecit'.

The artist John Holbein, known to us as Hans Holbein, was born in Basle in 1498 and died in London in 1554.
