In the collection of artefacts held by Newhaven Heritage Museum are many items associated with the fishing industry. Today, the use of modern materials and technology means that crafts once associated with the fishing are disappearing.

The eight tools shown here are a set of basket making tools. They were used by a basket maker who served his apprenticeship with a firm in Leith in the first part of the 20C. They include knives, tongs, pliers, a bodkin and spanner.

The people of the fishing village of Newhaven were given the opportunity to tell the story of their village with the opening of the Newhaven Heritage Museum in 1994. The Museum was set up in what was once part of the fishmarket building overlooking Newhaven Harbour.
