Description
Receipt issued by Forth (Trinity House of Leith) Pilotage Authority to Mr J. Hume on 8 February 1949 following his payment of the fee for a renewal of a pilot's licence. The form is printed in black ink on white paper, with details completed by typewriter. The receipt also has a treasurer's stamp and an orange 2D (pence) stamp in the bottom right corner.

For hundreds of years, fishermen from the Newhaven area acted as pilots for ships sailing up the Firth of Forth into the bustling port of Leith. The fishermen's knowledge of local waters made them a natural choice for this important work.
J. Hume's father was a pilot before him. In the early 20th century, he received a pocket barometer from the Czar of Russia to thank him for guiding his Royal Yacht safely into Leith.
