The Shipwrecked Fishermen and Mariners' Society was formed in 1839 to raise funds for the bereaved families of fishermen and mariners lost at sea. Incorporated in an Act of Parliament, the Society's aims were to assist those who were shipwrecked, to give relief to all at sea, and to reward bravery.
The family name 'Linton' was associated with fishing in Newhaven for many years.
