Annfield, Great Michael Rise and New Lane flats were built in 1957 and designed for Edinburgh Corporation by Basil Spence & Partners. They aimed to be modern, but in keeping with the existing townscape. They used traditional Scottish materials such as washed harling, slate and stone. Great Michael Rise won a Saltire Society award in 1959.
Newhaven was founded in 1504 as a royal dockyard by James IV. It was selected to build the largest warship of the time, the 'Great Michael'. The natural bay area was chosen because of its proximity to Edinburgh and the waters were deeper than at the Port of Leith.
