The town of Hawick in the Scottish Borders dates from around the 11th century. It is famous both as a centre for textiles and for the Common Riding celebrations in May and June, which commemorate the defeat of English forces at Hornshole in 1514, and maintain the tradition of riding the boundaries of the common land.
