Lauriston's Yard 1926; Firemaster Pordage with Mac

Description

Firemaster Pordage stands with Mac the dog in the yard of Lauriston Fire Station, Edinburgh. He is wearing a fire officer's uniform and has his hand casually in his pocket. Four other firemen are also standing around a Dennis fire engine which has many hoses coming off the back.

Arthur Pordage was Firemaster of Edinburgh Fire Brigade from 1896-1927. In 1911 Firemaster Pordage devised a set of signals for firemen to use at emergency situations to avoid the need to shout and ensure that messages were received correctly. The signals were based on Army and Navy semaphore.
