Title
Autumn Leaves
Description
A landscape scene set in the autumn season. The impasto brushwork impresses on the viewer the rich and sumptuous colours of the autumn leaves. The foreground is filled with colour as the branches of large trees sweep across the canvas. In the background a small croft cottage can be seen between the leaves. The warm glow of the setting sun lights the sky in a rich blast of orange and yellow.

Following in the footsteps of his illustrious grandfather and Scottish landscape painter of the same name, MacTaggart, developed his own unique style of colourist painting that also drew on the example of north European expressionism that he witnessed through the example of painters like Edvard Munch, who exhibited in Edinburgh in 1931. His use of colour and his technique were also greatly influenced by the works of Matthew Smith and Georges Rouault.
