This picture depicts the royal procession in Waterloo Place on its way to Holyrood Palace, and the King is visible on the right of the picture in an open topped carriage. The work shows the crowds of people who turned out for the significant scene. The painting gives a panoramic view of Edinburgh with Holyrood palace, Edinburgh Castle amongst many monuments and buildings.

George IV visited Edinburgh in 1822, the first British monarch to visit the Scottish capital since the Stuarts. The event was masterminded by Sir Walter Scott, who had been instrumental in persuading the King to make a visit in the first place.
George arrived in Leith to a stupendous welcome. This picture depicts the royal procession in Waterloo place on its way to Holyrood Palace, and the King is visible on the right of the picture in an open topped carriage. As well as being a wonderful representation of a memorable occasion, the painting is an interesting topographical record of the city.
