Fishing has been a constant theme in MacLean's work. He is concerned not just the process but also with the life and history of the people who live by the sea, especially in the Highlands where his family come from.
Davie's boxes, with their very specific and contained environments, incorporate a strange mixture of objects with a pervasive sense of archaeology and myth, and present a complex iconography that links them to Surrealism (for example Marcel Duchamp's 'Boite en Valise' from 1941) and the work of the American artist Joseph Cornell.
