Description

A printed programme for the Edinburgh Empire Theatre. At the top the theatres name is surrounded by a stylised thistle. Under that is a drawing of the theatre with it's onion shaped dome and the adjacent shops. At the bottom the owners and managers are listed as well as admission prices. The programme has a burn in it.

The Empire Palace Theatre opened on 7th November 1892 on the site in Nicolson Street, previously occupied by Newsome's Circus, which had been destroyed by fire. It was designed by Mr F Matcham and owned by Moss Empires.

After the tragic fire in 1911, in which many performers, including the Great Lafayette, perished, the stage was soon reconstructed and performances continued until 1927, when the theatre closed for a year and was rebuilt.
