Description
King George VI and his wife Queen Elizabeth at Edinburgh Castle Esplanade inspecting members of the Second World War civil defence groups, including the National Fire Service. They are accompanied by Fire Force Commander, Firemaster Muir. The members in the group are wearing uniforms with tin hats and shoulder bags. The King is wearing military uniform, and the Queen, a dress with pearls and a decorative hat. The King and Queen are accompanied by the Chief Constable W.B.R. Morren.

During World War II many men and women were recruited to groups to form Britain's civil defence. These people included air raid wardens, nurses and fire fighters. The aim was to ensure that Britain would be prepared in the event of an enemy attack.
