The first Wombles book, written by Elisabeth Beresford, was published in 1968. After an appearance on Jackanory, the BBC decided to make it into an animated series. Over 20 books, 30 television films and a stage show followed, making household names of Great Uncle Bulgaria, Madame Cholet, Orinoco and Tobermory. Voiced by Barnard Cribbens. The Wombles spent their time trying to clear up Wimbledon Common and recycle the rubbish left. What most people probably remember about the Wombles is the song 'Underground, over ground, wombling free&'
