Title
The Souls of the Blessed
Description
Seven souls stand with arms outreached. The winged figures stand amongst the clouds. Halo's of bronze light highlight the figures as angels reaching down to earth.
Artist / maker
Traquair, Phoebe Anna
Type
Silk embroidered linen
Location
City Art Centre
Accession number
CAC373/1964
These embroideries marked the emergence of Traquair as a designer craft worker with independent iconographic programme.
The central panel representing The Angle of Death and Purification was designed and worked independently. The other two: The Souls of the Blest (completed 1891) and Souls Waiting on Earth (1893) was subsequently added to form a tripartite screen for the artist's home. In them, we can detect resonances of the Pre-Raphaelite styles of Burne-Jones and Rossetti.
