This is possibly one of the earliest portraits painted by Ramsay on this scale.
Painted two years prior to his departure for Italy. This portrait shows the sophistication and technical skill of Ramsay, especially in the elegant drapery of the robes. The sitter was the youngest daughter of Sir James Hall, 2nd Bt. Of Dunglass and his second wife Margaret Pinge.
