Title
West Highland landscape
Description
Hovering delicately between abstraction and representation, Rae creates a complex vocabulary of mixed media which combines with oil paint to form a rich and varied texture. It is reminiscent of the natural colouring of a particular spot in the highland landscape under an ever changing coastal light, both overcast and illuminating.

Barbara Rae has been preoccupied for many years with the remoteness of Celtic highlands and has developed a Northern Romantic view of its dereliction with subjects such as crofts and quarries. Rae also has visited Spain during which she found many similarities with Spanish Uplands and the Scottish Highlands. Rae's paintings are not fixed views but ever changing landscapes. Rae seeks to capture not traditional views of the Scottish countryside. Instead she tries to reflect a series of shapes and forms that have a direct connection with the landscape.
