Large white clouds float across the clear blue sky.

Born in Edinburgh, Alexander Nasmyth's talent lay in the universal appeal of his subject matter. Having been trained by Allan Ramsay, Nasmyth was a multi-talented artist. He worked in architecture, stage set design, landscape design and painting. Naysmith's focus on the synthesis of the natural environment and human is expressed here in this view of the Port of Leith. The painting reflects the prosperity and significance of the Port of Leith, during the nineteenth century.
