The City Art Centre's collection generally dates from the middle of the 17th century to the present day and the early elements that make up the collection are portraits of people associated with the history of the city and the surrounding area, as well as topographical views that document the changing appearance of the city.
The early portraits include a high proportion of Lord Provosts. The earliest of these portraits is that of Sir James Stewart of Coltness, attributed to David Scougall. Sir James Stewart was Lord Provost for two periods, between 1648 and 1650 and between 1658 and 1660, immediately following the Civil War and Commonwealth.
