Edward Atkinson Hornel was a Scottish painter of landscapes, flowers, and foliage, often populated with wide-eyed children.
Edward Hornel was born in Australia of Scottish parents, he was brought up and lived practically all his life in Kirkcudbright, Dumfriesshire.
He studied for three years at the art school in Edinburgh, and for two years at Antwerp. Returning from Antwerp in 1885, he met George Henry and he became with the Glasgow School of artists.
In 1893-94 Hornel and Henry spent a year and a half in Japan, where he learned much about decorative design and spacing.
Hornel's later work became rather formulative, often combining the same group of children in a range of different settings. His painting style was bold, producing rich, textual surface by loading and scraping, smoothing and staining. Hornel's work is refined and atmospheric, and his drawing more naturalistic, combining sensuous appeal with emotional and poetic significance.
