Description
Wreckage and driftwood washed upon the sand provides the material and theme within this wall mounted sculpture. The three-dimensional elements are raised from the flat base. The artist has created swirling foam-like elements to the left of the sculpture. The outline of boat sails and flags seem to float amongst the sculpture.

This sculpture is known as a relief sculpture.
These are works that invite the viewer to complete the picture and participate in a radical intervention that literally brings the elements of the pieces together and breathes life into them.
This method of using pieces of driftwood and wreckage washed-up on the coast of Scotland and Suffolk, provide the raw material and inspiration for the building of relief sculptures that can be seen as both abstract assemblages and composite landscapes.
Mellis moved from Edinburgh to London and married fellow artist and writer Adrian Stokes, after which they both moved to St. Ives, making contact with the artist community there. From this time Mellis began working in an abstract constructivist style.
