David Octavius Hill was born in 1802 in Perth. The Scottish painter and arts activist collaborated with the engineer and photographer Robert Adamson between 1843 and 1847 to pioneer many aspects of photography in Scotland. After Robert Adamson's death in 1848, Hill returned to painting. His later work normally consisted of landscapes painted in a confident style.
