About the artist
Name
Crawhall, Joseph
Biography
Joseph Crawhall [known as Joseph Crawhall the third], was one of about 20 artists who became known as the Glasgow Boys, active in the late 1880s. He was born in Morpeth, Northumberland, the son of Joseph Crawhall a wood-engraver and arts promoter, and his wife, Margaret.
Crawhall had only two months formal art training from a time in 1882 spent in the studio of Aimée Morot in Paris. However he became an accomplished watercolourist and specialised in painting horses, animals and birds. His work was admired and acquired by the Glasgow shipowner and collector William Burrell.
