Description

Watercolour on paper of an abstract work. The scene depicts various shapes and patterns in a Japanese decorative style. The foreground depicts a long vertical shape that looks like a Japanese screen. To the left of the work there is an Iris flower placed among other objects including a brown bowl and a small gift wrapped with purple ribbon. To the top left of the screen lines of swift black, beige and lilac brush strokes. Looking to the right of the painting more shapes, white and black brushstrokes and objects swirl around one another.

With its reference to Japanese decorative design, this large abstract watercolour by Elizabeth Blackadder seems to exploit the generosity of space and asymmetrical layout of Japanese interiors. Blackadder uses a full range of calligraphic marks from which to assemble her light filled, contemplative compositions that echo the space, colour and simplicity of Japanese forms.
