Elizabeth Blackadder is the first woman to become both a member of the RSA and the RA, and was recently appointed Her Majesty's Limner in Scotland. Blackadder has built up a distinguished career in semi-abstract compositions in mixed media as well as more traditional graphic and painting skills in representing the architecture of Scotland and Venice; her favourite animal subject, the cat and detailed flower studies, of which the Iris is a popular example. Blackadder has been particularly influenced by the art and culture of Japan. This particular cultural influence compliments her minimalist but concise approach to subjects from both the natural and built environment. Irises, in which Blackadder's subtle observation and line are shown to best advantage, also display her mastery of the delicate art of watercolour painting.
