Circus Woman
Description
The painting is a figurative work in oil on canvas. The oblique stature of the female figure is emphasised by the elongated immensity of her torso. The pastel colours and the cubed abstract features give the work a sense of sadness.

Colquhoun moved with fellow artist and companion Robert MacBryde from Glasgow where they had both trained. They shared a studio with John Minton and other Neo-Romantic and European Modernist artists in London. Circus Woman dates from the late 1940s, when Colquhoun was suffering from a downturn in his fortunes. This is rather a tragic although brightly coloured figure, with an impression of melancholy detachment.
