John Jeffrey and his younger brother acquired their brewery on Heriot Bridge, Grassmarket in 1837 and traded under the name John Jeffrey & Co. In 1865, they moved to new premises at Roseburn, with brewing also continuing at the Heriot Brewery until 1900. The company acquired Edinburgh United Brewers in 1935 and converted to a public company in 1938 until it merged with Hammond United Brewers of Bradford and Hope and Anchor of Sheffield in 1960. The Heriot Brewery closed in the 1990s.
