This advertising poster from the 1920s for McEwan's beer features a cavalier holding up a large tankard of beer and toasting a serving girl in a public house. The man has long wavy hair and is wearing red jacket and trousers trimmed with lace cuffs. A basket hilted sword lies by his side and a hat with a large feather is on the table.

William McEwan was an apprentice of John Jeffrey, an Edinburgh brewer, and in 1856 he opened his own business- the Fountain Brewery, in Fountainbridge, Edinburgh. It merged with William Younger & Co Ltd, Abbey Brewery, to form Scottish Brewers Ltd in 1931, and again merged with Newcastle Breweries Ltd in 1960 to form Scottish & Newcastle Breweries Ltd.
