After his brewery in Kelso was destroyed by fire in 1886, William Murray established the Craigmillar Brewery which was registered as a limited liability company in 1897. The business expanded and brewing ceased at the Craigmillar Brewery in 1950, but continued at the North British Brewery. The company was acquired by Northern Breweries of Great Britain in 1960 and continued to brew until May 1962 when it transferred to Aitchison Jeffrey Ltd, Roseburn Terrace, Edinburgh. The North British Brewery closed in 1964.
