Title
East Smiths Close - South side of Grassmarket near east end
Description
Children play on a wooden bridge which crosses a narrow street in the Old Town of Edinburgh. A woman and a child are walking underneath the bridge and along the street between the tall tenement buildings. Stone steps lead up to the first floor entrance of a house and across the bridge. The spire of a church is visible behind the rooftops and against a cloudy sky. In the foreground, a man leans against a wall and two boys who are barefoot and wearing patched clothes look out of the picture at the viewer.

The Grassmarket is an open area situated below Edinburgh Castle at the west end of the Cowgate. It was, for many centuries, an important venue for commercial and social activity in the Old Town. A weekly market was held here from the 15th to the early 20th century. It was also the site of many public executions. The Grassmarket continues to be a popular area for socialising, with a large number of pubs and restaurants.
