Pollocks Entry - Allisons Close Cowgate, Edinburgh, mostly demolished

Description

A block of tenement housing has sections of wooden panelling and many small windows. There are shirts strung out to dry from one of the windows and below them a long pole for drying laundry projects from another window. A narrow stone arch provides a walkway through the buildings.

The Cowgate runs from its junction with St Mary's Street (formerly St Mary's Wynd) and the Pleasance to the Grassmarket. Cattle were driven along this route when entering Edinburgh from grazing land outside the city. The Cowgate Port was a gateway through the Flodden Wall situated at the street's east end.
