Appointed chief of Atuona, Paaaeua stands to the left in a smart two-piece suit, while the dispossed ex-chief, Hakaiki Moipu stands beside him in the traditional dress of a chief with grass skirt, shoulder cape and headdress.

The image is from the photograph album entitled 'The Cruise of the Casco' of Robert Louis Stevenson's travels around Hawaii and French Polynesia in 1888.
