Description

The grand Georgian tenement buildings of Moray Place curve round the edge of the street with a garden in its centre. The garden is circular with a bed of trees and bushes in its centre which are surrounded by lawn with bushes and metal railings at the edge, to mark the garden off from the street.

This image comes from 'Modern Athens', a book of engravings based on drawings by Thomas Shepherd published in 1829. In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries Edinburgh was growing rapidly. The popular neoclassical architectural style of the time was inspired by the ancient Greeks and Romans, and Edinburgh was nicknamed 'Athens of the North'. Shepherd's engravings celebrate the beauty of Edinburgh and show many notable buildings and streets both within the city, and further afield.

Moray Place is part of the mid-nineteenth century development which took place on lands feued by the Earl of Moray, immediately to the north-west of the first New Town. The plan was devised by James Gillespie Graham, and also includes Ainslie Place, Randolph Crescent and Doune Terrace.
