Ewbank, John Wilson
Biography
John Wilson Ewbank was born in Gateshead, County Durham in 1779. Originally destined for the priesthood, he changed vocation and became apprentice to T. Coulson, an ornamental painter in Newcastle.
After visiting Edinburgh with Coulson, Ewbank enrolled as a pupil with Alexander Nasmyth and settled in Edinburgh as an independent artist and drawing master.
