Biography
Moses Griffith was born in 1747, the son of a labourer, in Caernarvonshire. In 1769 he entered the service of Thomas Pennant who had use for his artistic talents. He accompanied his master on tours, recording scenes as required. The studies made on their travels to Scotland in the early 1770's, for example, was published as 'A Tour in Scotland and a voyage to the Hebrides' in 1774. Other travel collections were published subsequently. His work was widely distributed by Pennant, with some of the engravings being made by Griffith himself. Thomas Pennant died in 1798 but his son continued his patronage to the artist. Moses Griffith died in 1819.
