Excerpt from page "Duke's Walk - "Washing House. Hunters Bog - Gavin Watson, begs leave to acquaint the public etc that he has lately entered into possession of the washing house situated at the foot of the Duke's Walk, Abbey - The softness and fine quality of the water is well known and no situation can equal about Edinburgh for bleaching.
The price for a single tub for a servant including supply of water both hot and cold and accommodation in the washing house for the clothes all night, is for a summer day 1 shilling, bleach and drying included, a winter day 8 pence, and the dues for bleaching and drying clothes was led at home by private families are charged according to their quantities at a reasonable rate. N.B Milk of all kinds may be had at the farmhouse as usual" E.E.C April 17 1790.
