This is a page from the book 'Origin, nomenclature and location of various houses and streets in Edinburgh' by John Smith.
The Watergate was an arched gateway into the Canongate. Standing immediately to the north of Abbey Strand in front of Holyroodhouse it was the principle entrance to the Canongate from the east. It was not a fortified gate, but provided a degree of security and was used for the collection of customs. Its name stems either from the Tummel Burn which crossed the road at this point, or from a large pond nearby used for watering horses. The gate was blown down in the 1820s, and the replacement did not survive beyond the mid 1900s.
