Page 112 from John Smith's Houses and Streets in Edinburgh
Description
Excerpt from page " Victoria Street 1824 - The second and more important project is to carry a new street in an oblique direction from the foot of the bow to the Lawnmarket at the west side of the County Hall. It will be 500 feet underneath and the difference in level between the two extremities is 61 feet which gives a rise of one foot in nine. By some alteration this may be reduced to one foot in ten which is the same rise as in Niddry Street, and much less that the Bow.....it would necessarily be a great thoroughfare and the building stations would bring a high price" Edinburgh Evening Courant Oct 30 1824.

Page also includes photograph East Sciennes Place, Causewayside.
