Excerpt from page "St James Square 1781 - The situation in this square is dry and healthy. It is sheltered by the buildings of the New Town from the west wind, which well known there to blow with uncommon violence from these quarters. It is out of reach of the stench of the butchers shambles so intolerable to the neighbourhood in the summer months......." Edinburgh Evening Courant Feb 3 1781.
