Excerpt from page " South Bridge 1784 - Edinburgh of late has been very much improved and enlarged - From the West Port to the bottom of the Canongate, it measures at least a good Scots mile, and yet in this great stretch there is only one passage for carriages from the South to the High Street and to the New Town viz St Mary's Wynd.....A South Bridge is not merely an improvement, it is absolutely neccessary[sic]...."
Extract from a letter to the Printer of the Caledonian Mercury Newspaper signed [?] and dated Jan 24 1784.
