A memorial sculpture by Sir John Steell, Charlotte Square, Edinburgh
Description
A statue of a man on a horse sits on top of a large rectangular plinth. The horse is posed at rest with its head lowered. There are friezes on each side of the plinth and at each corner of the stone base of the monument there are statues of men, women and children. The base of the monument is fenced by decorative railings.

This is a photograph from the book 'Origin, nomenclature and location of various houses and streets in Edinburgh'. Charlotte Square is situated close to the West End of Princes Street in Edinburgh. It was named on James Craig's original New Town plan as St. George's Square, but changed in 1786 to Charlotte Square after Queen Charlotte, wife of George III.
Sir John Robert Steell RSA was a Scottish sculptor. He is best known for a number of sculptures displayed in Edinburgh, including the statue of Sir Walter Scott at the base of the Scott Monument.
